last night’s dream: office space

I dreamed they rearranged the cubicles at my job and lowered the cubicle walls so everyone could see everyone else when they were sitting down. It was really distracting cause the cubicles were smaller also so we were all in each others’ personal spaces. My cubicle was off a main thoroughfare and people kept bumping my elbow every time they walked past.

There was some other stuff in the dream but I don’t really remember it.

last night’s dream: cite your sources

I was reading the latest issue of Comedian’s Quarterly, a magazine for comedians that has industry news. This magazine doesn’t exist in real life. I read a blurb about a comedian who had recently passed and they quoted a friend of mine. It occurred to me that the quotes attributed to my friend were actually things I had said to that friend in a phone call. This friend of mine was using my words and not attributing them to me.

The next article was a longer piece about a new up and coming comedian. Halfway through the article, they stopped calling him his own name and started calling him Nate Van Deusen, which was my name in the dream. For some reason I decided to change my last name to my brother’s wife’s last name. I don’t know why. Anyway, the article was still about this other guy but they kept calling him Nate Van Deusen, which was me.

I was going to show my friends this article but I couldn’t find where I had set down the magazine. I was babysitting my niece Astrid at the time and she had pulled down all my books and magazines off the shelves and I couldn’t find anything. Also, she had colored all over my books.

April Fools’ Day Ideas

This year, instead of coming out to your parents or telling your friends you’re pregnant, do these things instead:

1. Tell a struggling business owner that you’re interested in investing in their startup. Make them prepare a presentation.

2. In a casual relationship? Tell them you want to be exclusive. Use the L-word.

3. Have flowers delivered to the ugliest person at your job.

4. In a serious relationship? Propose.

5. Leave your waitress a tip with Canadian money.

6. File a sexual harrassment complaint against your boss.

7. Borrow a friend’s phone and call in a bomb threat.

8. Hide a can of mace in someone’s carry-on luggage.

9. Tell everyone your best friend’s secrets.

10. Have divorce papers served to married people you know.

ultrashort movie review: G.I. Joe: Retaliation **

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) Poster

Kinda dumb. Some cool action. They tried to fit too many storylines in this movie. I was killing it with my commentary though.

Olympus Has Fallen (2013) Poster

“Let’s play a game called Fuck Off. You go first.”

Everything you need to know about this movie can be summed up in this bit of dialogue delivered by Gerard Butler. Delightfully stupid.

ultrashort movie review: Spring Breakers ****

Spring Breakers (2012) Poster

When my buddy Chris Lay asked me if I wanted to see this movie, I said yes even though I hadn’t heard anything about it. I had no expectations going in and this movie was still not what I was expecting. I think I liked it. Beautiful cinematography. The movie looks and sounds cool. Great editing. Dark comedy. Good laughs. Want to see someone do coke off a naked lady? Want to see James Franco perform fellatio on a handgun? Want to see Gucci Mane do anything? This is the movie for you.

ultrashort movie review: Dead Man Down **

Dead Man Down (2013) Poster

The latest iteration of the “tough guy with a mysterious past has a soft spot for a woman in need” trope. It’s a Chuck Norris movie minus Chuck Norris and minus martial arts. It’s entertaining and has cool violence. Watch it on Netflix. I expected more out of Niels Arden Oplev’s English language directorial debut (Oplev directed the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

ultrashort movie review: Oz the Great and Powerful ****

Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) Poster

I saw this in 3D and it was fantastic. Beautiful, vivid, visually stunning. A really fun movie. Great for families but I went by myself and had fun. A cool origin story to the well-known Wizard of Oz. I haven’t read any of the L. Frank Baum books so I can’t speak to how closely the movie followed the original stories but the Kingdom of Oz felt authentic to me. The plot moved naturally. Some twists seemed telegraphed but would be perfect for kids. Fans of steampunk will probably like some of the sequences in this movie as long as they can avoid booing references to Edison.

ultrashort movie review: Beautiful Creatures *

Beautiful Creatures (2013) Poster

I didn’t hate this movie but I didn’t like it either. I’m not going to say Beautiful Creatures is a bad movie, it was just a bad choice for me. I like witches and demons and vampires and stuff probably more than a typical 30-something male, so I thought I’d give this a shot. Readers of my reviews will remember that I liked the last Twilight movie. The problem with this movie is that I didn’t really care about the characters. An unlikeable character can be effective in a movie, but I didn’t even care enough to like or dislike any of them. Boring. Also, the story was dumb.
